Birthday is an autobiographical concert for harp, guitar, and two voices, offering an intimate and raw glimpse into the lives of its creators and performers, Danny Neyman and Hila Gluskinos. The performance explores questions of birth and death, relationships and love, intergenerational trauma, horniness and catastrophe, magic and dreams, music and memory - within the reality of everyday life in Israel in recent years.
Unfolding as a stream of consciousness that moves between different subjects, the performance also delves deeply into the longing for parenthood and the fear of it, and how these desires and questions become entangled with the events unfolding around them. It explores these questions from two perspectives: that of a gay man confronting the complex possibilities the modern world offers to his desire for a child, and that of a woman who does not want to become a mother, grappling with the questions and emotions that the choice of a life without children raises for her.
The performance is an intimate, ironic, painful, and often funny duet in which two streams of thought meet onstage through music and text, inviting the audience into a different kind of intimacy - rooted in the act of listening.
Running time: approximately 75 minutes
“Go, go, go - if you love things that are outside the box, and appreciate subtlety, perversion, creative freedom of thought, and all sorts of other beautiful things that stir something deep inside.”
Ran Danker
“One of the most beautiful things I’ve seen in years. Everything hurt from laughing so hard, and then everything just hurt.”
Zohar Elmakias
“A magical performance unlike anything we’ve seen here before. You could hear a match drop in the theater space, because no one wanted to miss a single word or nuance.”
Yael Neeman
“Pure delight. A performance that brilliantly juggles singing, speaking, and playing music, essentially inventing a format that defies definition.”
Rutie Direktor
“Wonderful, wonderful, intelligent, funny, profound, and witty.”
Dana Olmert
“Bittersweet in the best possible way.”
Avia Farchi
“A work of extraordinary subtlety and immense power that casts a spell over its audience. It is not just an aesthetic gift of beauty, but a gift of humanity at its finest, brimming with compassion, acceptance, and love. Don’t miss it.”
